Rezoning to commercial sought

By BILL SHEA, Messenger staff writer

After 40 years by the City Square, the Rifle and Pistol Club of Fort Dodge is moving to a new home.

The group recently bought the former Lions Club building at 300 S. 13th St. and is in the process of moving its headquarters there.

It's relocating from the former Kautzky Sporting Goods Store at 508-B Central Ave. Club President Al Little told the city's Plan and Zoning Commission Tuesday that
maintenance problems there prompted the move.

''That building is falling down around us,'' he said.

To accommodate an indoor firing range, the club plans a 13-foot-long addition to the back of its new building in the basement, Little said.

A switch to commercial zoning for the South 13th Street building has been requested by the club to comply with city law. The property is now zoned for residential use.

The Plan and Zoning Commission is considering that change. It took no action Tuesday apart from requesting a report from the city planning staff.

The west end of the parking lot behind Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home, 307 S. 12th St., would also be rezoned to commercial at the same time if the request is
approved.

Commission member Jim Kesterson said it would also make sense to rezone the former Sacred Heart School, across the street from the gun club building at 214 S.
13th St., to commercial as well.
